How did you get into debt?
Much of my debt is from graduate school. Then, in my early thirties, I went through a divorce. After this, I had no savings and accrued credit card debt. A lot of my debt is from sustaining a studio practice, but also from cost of living (food, medical, transportation).
How does your economic reality effect your art?
I do not apply to some shows and residencies because I cannot afford application fees. I can't purchase all the materials I need to make work. I want to show my work as much as I can, but worry about shipping, transportation, and installation costs. It is very stressful and a constant worry. I really feel constrained in what I make and how ambitious I can be.
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
I think I would be able to create the work that I want without material constraints. Because I am trying to get out of debt, I don't follow through with ideas I have in the studio. I cannot afford the cost of materials.
