How did you get into debt?
My debt is entirely education tuition related- from by undergrad and then recent graduate degree. I worked the entire time I was in school, but I needed loans to help cover my tuition. I knew that the cost of these universities was higher because they were private, but they also were places that I knew I was going to get a great education. I was thinking of what I would learn first then how I would pay it further down the line. Was this slightly insane? Possibly. But I guess I am a little too. But I decided to do what I thought would be best for me and my artwork; at the risk of taking on the education debt. And in hindsight, yes, I learned a ton at these schools and got to learn from some amazing people.
How does your economic reality effect your art?
I make all of my artwork from mostly free materials. This limitation is actually very inspiring to me. I can not afford a studio space or a car. I live a pretty simple life and this is only possible because of the cheap rent I am paying right now, This will not last forever. I envision a future where I will have to throw away my collection of art supplies and figure out how and where to store my art. This terrifies me.
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Right now, no. But it does effect what is at stake and puts the business aspect in a whole different perspective.
