How did you get into debt?
I mostly have credit card debt due to over spending for artist materials, supplies, residencies, and travel for projects. I live in Texas so I often need to travel for my work.
How does your economic reality effect your art?
I am afraid of debt and how it can imprison you. I am very cautious now with spending, and want to spend the rest of my life debt free. I would love to move to Brooklyn sometime and be able to support myself, and I hope that this can happen within the next 5 years. I try to plan ahead for big projects and save money accordingly, but I am more reliant on grants and fellowships to attend residencies. Also, because I work for a state institution, I have to be concerned with self-censorship. If I was economically self reliant, I would not have such a concern with freedom of speech.
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Even though I love my job, if I was not in debt, I would not be so tied to my location. I would be more able to move to a larger metropolitan center, and I think this could help my work get even braver.
