How did you get into debt?
All of my debt comes from student loans. I went to a private school for undergrad and got a great education, but it came with a high price. After graduating I found I could not find a job in my field without at least a Masters. I went back to school, racking up more debt, and I have found that even with a terminal degree a good job that will help pay off my debt will be nearly impossible to find.
How does your economic reality effect your art?
I am not able to work with the quantity or scale I would like and I cannot afford to have 2 dimensional work framed. I have to borrow equipment like cameras to document or film my work. I have to rent out the use of kilns, use found materials or make smaller work that can be created at home.
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Absolutely. I would have 75% more income per month to spend on tools, materials, and applications for exhibitions and other opportunities. It would be bigger and better quality. I would be able to afford to make more of what I make, make it in a studio space of my own, and finish it myself through proper studio equipment.
