How did you get into debt?
Private and government loans for college
How does your economic reality effect your art?
As my debt has been payed down, I've felt less compelled to create work that perpetuates McMansionism. I've began making more easily transportable work and I find the conceptual process more challenging. I'm still a painter by trade and process, but I like making murals instead. I'd spend more money on traveling and experiencing the world if I had less debt. I'm currently saving money to buy a "tinyhome" from an artisan in Colorado. I'm happier with less stuff and less debt!!! :) As my debt decreases, my smile increases!
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Yes! Paintings sell with ease. When I first graduated from Art School I made large paintings because they would sell and I enjoyed pushing my comfort to work larger. As my debt went down and I traveled around more. I felt less pressure to make easy sellable work. I also started painting murals and I enjoyed the community interaction in producing them.
