How did you get into debt?
I stopped paying on time until I couldn't pay. While this was happening I was moving back home to Puerto Rico, leaving a long and intense relationship in California and also establishing a career as a performance artist in the island and abroad. The first thing I stopped paying was my students loans, later I also wasn't able to pay my credit cards and finally a car I had bought with my ex that neither one of us finish making the payments so we lost it and BUUUMMM your credit score is destroyed. I moved to PR in 2010.

How does your economic reality effect your art?
It is emotionally draining. My current economic reality is one of exhaustion. I am constantly making myself available for any job, project or work that can generate funds for my living/working expenses. My art is affected by the lack of time I can dedicate to research, workshops, training and making new work. For the past year due to overwhelming feelings of frustration with the economics of live arts/performance in Puerto Rico and abroad it has made me reconsider how live arts are being valued and the cost of creating and presenting of live art? Another big questions in my work are: Whats the value of live arts? Who gives it value? How can one create a sustainable practice while creating live/performance art? The theme of $MONEY$$DINERO$ is in my work, specially as I am living in Puerto Rico with the imposition of a Control Board that is also working on collecting the 73,000 millions in debt that the government and the country has right now.

Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Yes!...it has been because of my economic and political reality that I've shifted how I relate to money and consumerism. My pieces are created with objects and materials that already exist in my home/studio. When I do purchase additional materials to create my work I give it thought trying to understand how will the object exist post performance can it be reused or those it's value because is the result of a live art work piece.
