I am very much in debt. 90% of my total debt are student loans for undergrad and grad school. The only way I could attend college was to take out loans. Even when obtaining scholarships, I always took out loans to be able to purchase art supplies or to help pay bills. My credit card debt comes from digital equipment purchases for my work.
I make my living working and hustling as a full-time artist. I work with several curators, galleries, and museums. I don't have any contracts, so I am always reaching out to individuals who can assist in helping me sell work.I occasionally participate in art markets where I sell handmade prints. I regularly reach out to patrons and collectors via newsletters, personal emails, and texts. In January, I'll begin teaching to supplement my income and will begin working in public art.
Debt, for the most part, slows down all my projects. I can only buy a limited amount of supplies, so big projects are often put on hold. Supplies include materials for painting, software programs for media editing, and printmaking equipment.
