How did you get into debt?
Undergrad and Grad school loans, frequent moves
How does your economic reality effect your art?
My economic reality most significantly affects the time I have to make, research and think. I work 40+ hours a week and the energy I give to my job takes from what I am able to accomplish as an artist. It means I have three jobs between work, my art practice, and promoting my art and one thing always suffers. Usually that is the promotion of my work and where my career can go because of that lack of time. It affects the scale and content of my work, and the space that I have to work in. It affects the opportunities I am able to apply for, because of the responsibility and time commitment of my job doesn't match up with the flexibility most residencies and fellowships require. I work as hard as I can anyway, but these barriers are important to talk about. I feel like I am seen as less of an artist because I have to work full time, and I have to work full time to support myself and cover my debt.
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
I would have more freedom to experiment with large scale projects, and much more time to make my work, because I could work far less hours to support myself.
