I went to a private art school that was a five-year college at the time I enrolled. I knew that I had to go to college and that everyone took out student loans, and didn't think that it would create such a hardship in my future. Most of my loans are private. The options available to defer private loans are extremely limited and they are relentless and unforgiving. Unable to make the minimum payments when I graduated, I deferred them for two years, and then another three when I was in graduate school. During this time, the interest of the loans accumulated and make up the bulk of my debt. I pay the absolute minimum I can and will probably never be able to pay off my student loans.
I am an adjunct professor at a community college. I teach three classes. I also bartend and make at least twice as much money bartending as I do teaching.
I do not have a studio because I can't afford to rent a space. I work out of my apartment and store most of my work and supplies with family. This has severely limited my creative output and the scale at which I make work.
