"Stanford White (Little Sphinx)" 2016, oil and seersucker on canvas, 36" x 30"
How did you get into debt?
Cost of living in New York City, Graduate school loans, not making enough money to cover my expenses
"Fog" 2016, acrylic, resin, handmade lace, and silver leaf on canvas 41" x 30"
Describe your art practice
I am a history painter who focuses on forgotten histories with roots in appalachian culture. I work with oil, acrylic, resin, fabric, found objects, and most recently video and sound components. I use elements of color theory and photo realism in my work to make the found elements and fabric to make them sometimes indecipherable from what is painted.
"Opium Poppy Universe" 2015, acrylic and polyester on canvas, 36" x 28"
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
I think it would be more complicated and explore artistic avenues that I haven't gone down before because I would have more money to invest in my production.
