Time Present, 2016, painted steel, 50' x 10' x 3'
How did you get into debt?
100% loans for NYU MFA
Flag State/Tulsa, 2016, collaged sailcloth flags, poles and hardware, 8 city blocks
How does your economic reality effect your art?
For at least 5 years after grad school I couldn't afford to apply to any residencies, fellowships or other opportunities since they would interfere with my many money making gigs. I often had to live in super shitty apartments with black mold, dangerous/crazy roommates and serious noise violations. I was constantly anxious and sleep-deprived, going from one crisis to another.
Soft Power/January, 2016, gouache and acrylic on paper, 4" x 6" (x31)
Would your work look different if you weren't in debt?:
Yes, I had to learn to make work with less than no funding, studio or institutional support. I don't see this aspect of debt as a negative.
